You began smoking as a teenager. It was cool and sexy. Media advertisers and movie stars said so. What you didn't know was that the key ingredient in tobacco products is nicotine, one of the most addictive and deadly drugs on this planet. You became hooked before you even knew it, and have been smoking ever since. Revealed to be poison, it's not so sexy anymore, yet in the USA the subject of cigarette and snuff consumption is not rational. They are deadly products and the mass marketing is nothing short of legalized toxic drug distribution. But no one takes responsibility. Growers, buyers, manufacturers, wholesalers, and retailers. (I'm not making them buy the product!) The bastards are killing people just the same. Man, what a great business to be in if you are one of those with little or no character. Raise prices, the addicted will pay anything. And all that tax revenue for the politicians, they will never let it go. So the deck is stacked against you and the only way to rebel is to quit. But you have to want to quit. You have to want to quit more than anything you've ever done in your life. It is do-able. No bull. All you need is to get mad, more angry than you have ever been, plus the correct plan. That's all.
Now Read This Closely. This is the answer, the revelation to quitting. And you won't get this anywhere else.
Have a final goal of which quitting tobacco is only a small part.
The motivation you might say. I found this out by luck and not by using my small unhelpfull brain.
This unlikely road for me began when I read a newspaper article concerning the Iowa Senior Olympics. I was mildly interested and looked it up on-line. There were any number of events to choose from, badminton to cycling. I checked into it a bit more seriously and began to feel that this was something that I wanted to do. The closest I have ever come to sports in the past was Athletes Foot when I was ten, yet somehow it appealed to me now. The cycling event, hmm. But I could never train for that while I was still smoking. I had little wind for anything.
The cigarettes would have to go.
This changed my focus to the training and not so much to the act of quitting. To actually quit, I went cold turkey while using my shortcomings as a lever. I acknowledge that I am a weak and undisciplined person so I set myself up for a do-or-die situation. I went to all the people closest to me, the people whom I love and need their respect, and made a big deal of the fact that I was quitting smoking forever and competing in the Senior Olympics. When one does this, it's either you quit and receive their unrelenting admiration, or you fail and never again will they think of you as a strong person or someone who follows through. ...It worked like a charm. I wouldn't dare have them see me fail. Look, the temptation is ever present but tolerable the first few weeks. Treat your discomfort as if you are living with the worst nag in town, but you relish the idea that she will soon be dead. One experiences a constant craving or hunger. You will have a meal and fifteen minutes later you are ravenous again. Weight gain is almost inevitable. I countered that with beginning my gym visits, but still gained 13 pounds in two months. My initial goal was to quit smoking and lose weight at the same time. How stupid was that?
Alert! At any time there could be a whispering voice in your head, a sneaky little jerk that tries to trick you and ruin everything. "Pssst. It's okay to have just one. No one will know. You deserve it."
Don't put up with that. Stand right up, shake your fist in the air, and no matter where you are at the time, shout,
"Shut up, you Little Slimeball."
A few words of caution before attempting to quit. Remove anything from your home that could be useful as a weapon. Avoid very annoying people. Also, alert all co-workers to keep their distance. Mr. Easygoing now operates with a hair-trigger.
Dearest Jack, Thanks for all the great times.
Your loving, Rita.

Dude! Oxygen tanks are gnarly only on dive boats, the Cape launch pad, and Mt. Everest.
You say that playing Russian Roulette is your business. That's probably true if you have no loved ones. Otherwise, living risky with tobacco could be considered a selfish act.
