If you did some time in the military when you were young and immortal and survived though no fault of your own, you may have earned retirement goodies under the VA.
When I applied for my Social Security benefits, the person that I was working with stated that an additional 30 bucks per month would be added to my check because of my time in service.  I didn't expect that.  It was like the U.S. Government was buying me a cup of coffee everyday for the rest of my life, an honest-to-goodness thank you for time served.  That goes down pretty darn well.
The surprise got me thinking about the medical check-up that I needed to begin my exercise program.  Why not get it through the V.A.?  I didn't know a thing about them and it might be good info for this website.  It turned out to be a good decision.

EMERGENCY ROOM!!!
The other day, I needed to go to the City Hospital emergency room..
Not wanting to sit there for 4 hours, I put on my old Corps fatigues and stuck a patch onto the front of my shirt that I had downloaded off the  Internet.   When I went into the E.R., 3/4 of the people got up and left.

My default feelings toward government employees has changed radically due to my latest experiences with the V.A.  The were efficient, professional, friendly, and helpful.  I was probed, x-rayed, gone over inch by inch inside and out, and all this done with a minmum of waiting.  An all-in-all good experience.  The buildings look the same as they did decades ago yet on the inside they are updated and organized.  And there appeared to be massive expansion going on  with construction zones all over the place.  My visits make me feel better about how our young military must be being treated.  They deserve the best.
I expected to see a bunch of young Vets from the middle eastern theaters at the VA Hospital.  But I was treated as an out-patient and therefore all the other  visitors that I saw were in my age bracket.  The new Vets were being taken care of in another area of the spralling hospital campus.
If you qualify, the VA benefits are great.  They take care of your every medical requirement. Medicare, supplemental and prescription insurance are not needed.  But after witnessing some of  the other visitors at the VA, I felt really healthy, almost guilty for being there.  I decided to pay my hundred bucks per month for Medicare as my share, and let the VA take care of everything else.  That means that I am responsible for 80% of my care while the government takes care of 20%.  That feels more fair since I'm the one who neglected my health.  I'm just lucky not to be a wreck.
The American Legion and the VFW  keep our present leaders informed of Veterans Affairs.

If a statue of a person on a horse has both front legs in the air, the person died in battle. If the horse has one front leg in the air, the person died as a result of wounds received in battle. If the horse has all four legs on the ground, the person died of natural causes.
I hadn't been to a V.A. Hospital for over forty years.  Coincidentily, that is about the same time that I decided to have very little contact with doctors in the future, and nothing more to do with the U.S. Government other than to vote and pay my taxes.
...I made the necessary calls, provided the required info (a copy of my DD214), and then I was in.  I asked for a full check-up.  Easier than a local doctor's office, they scheduled me, gave me a primary doctor, and the staff couldn't have been nicer.  There has been great improvement to the system over the years.
