On a week day it's tough to get more than a few people to match up their schedules with a training session.  Our club is no exception.  Most Triathlon clubs are made up of Individual swim/bike/run competitors.  Relay teams differ in that they consist of people wishing to compete in only one or two portions of these events.  Club Tripod was formed this year as a place to match up people to relay teams for competing in Triathlons but also includes those who wish to participate in the entire triathlon. Nearly twenty people are Club Tripod original amateur members who competed this year in the 2009 HyVee Triathlon.  Two of its members are over 65, the balance in their 20's.  Many people want to do something like this but are a bit intimidated when confronted with the idea of completing in all three portions of the competition.  This way they can ease into the sport and see how it works for them.  The HyVee Triathlon is the professional competitor's largest purse event in the world.

The Cycling Time Trials for the 2009 Iowa Senior Olympics were held June 6 in Elkhart.  A near level piece of rural highway witnessed a hearty bunch of riders fighting the elements for the ribbons.  The weather had been iffy and a 70% chance of rain forecasted with high winds.  Fortunately, the rain held off and the competition went ahead.  But not without a nice steady 15 to 20 mph breeze from the south.  Photos.
It was actually two time trials in one, the 5k and 10k.  Understanding this has to do with the National Senior competitions which are held only every other year.  2009 is a non-qualifying year, therefore with the rules relaxed Iowa combined the two races which saves lots of time.  There are two legs to the 10k race, so they chose the first leg into the wind as one's time for the 5k race.  My first competition, I couldn't help but notice how laid back everyone appeared to be with lots of congenial talk going on, a bunch of thirty somethings with wrinkles, and the volunteers were really adept at making everything run smoothly.  It was a life enjoyment event for the lot of them and the competition was thrown in just to rate oneself, to feel some relevance.  In speaking to a few  of them, many had been competing since the 1980's.  The wind didn't bother them and in fact they took it as a challenge.
Personally, I didn't break any records but I suppose I did okay for a rookie.  I also came to realize that I had been concentrating on the wrong things in training.  My lungs were my weak point from all those years of smoking.  Out on the course I was puffing like a steam engine which is not unusual but I could only go as fast as my lungs would allow.  My heart rate was in the machine gun range.  It dawned on me that I could never place in an event in this condition, no matter how much I trained, that is unless no one else showed up.  The numbers attained in the gym were not even close to those experienced on the road, the elements and conditions paramount. To improve I would have to look into the fundamentals of lung capacity, find an expert, and learn the best way to re-attain full function.  I had been told it would take two or more years naturally.  I have to speed that process up considering I'm 65 with no time to waste.  The rest of it is just conditioning and will fall into place just fine.  One has to keep on plugging and constantly search for that work-around to success.
Thank goodness the weather has changed for the better.  I don't have to spend all that time in the gym.  I connect to the bike trail system only a block from my door so aerobics and conditioning can all be taken care of with daily rides.  The tough part will be to go to the gym, use the machines and weight train when I am suppose to.

Clip One  -  Starting Out
When deciding on an avenue of exercise, pick a passion.  It does not matter what the course, the end result of preempting illness and enjoying people is your goal.  And there is a positive side effect.  A hidden aggressive and competitive nature kicks in, no matter your age.  One becomes addicted to the rigors of improvement.  "I need to better my time.  I'll go an extra twenty minutes per day in training.  Maybe I ought to quit drinking, too.  I think that's dragging me down.  And I'm not going to that place to eat out anymore, the food is too rich."

For me another important motivation for consistent exercising is that when I'm down for that final count and laid out during my wake, I want everyone to whisper,
"Doesn't he look great!"
You might think about that.

My choice is cycling, a great playing field leveler.  It avoids the pounding of running on joints and back.  And swimming in my case would be needlessly flirting with death.  I enjoy the feel of the breeze on my face and there is the element of speed.  No matter the hot temperature, it is always cool when you keep moving.

You will find that I don't interview enough mature people in the clips.  I suppose the reason is that I don't know that many people my own age who participate in vigorous exercise, and I'm too busy at these events to spend much time searching for them.  At a few competitions this season, sadly I didn't see anyone over forty plus.  And I really don't know why.  One does not have to act old because there are a few miles on the body.  The body will stay with you as long as you keep moving and don't give in to advancing age.
Your Health Care starts with you
To the government you are a number and an expense.
One afternoon a lawyer was riding in his limousine when he saw two men along the roadside eating grass.  Disturbed, he ordered his driver to stop and he got out to investigate.  He asked one man, "Why are you eating grass?"
We don't have any money for food," the poor man replied. "We have to eat grass."
"Well, then, you can come with me to my house and I'll feed you," the lawyer said.
"But sir, I have a wife and two children with me. They are over there, under that tree."
"Bring them along," the lawyer replied.
Turning to the other poor man he stated, "You come with us, also."
The second man, in a pitiful voice, then said, "But sir, I also have a wife and SIX children with me!"
"Bring them all, as well," the lawyer answered..
They all entered the car, which was no easy task, even for a car as large as the limousine was.  Once underway, one of the poor fellows turned to the lawyer and said, "Sir, you are too kind.  Thank you for taking all of us with you."
The lawyer replied, "Glad to do it.  You'll really love my place.  The grass is almost a foot high."

'The happiest of people don't necessarily have the best of everything;
They just make the most of anything.

1. It's important to have a woman, who helps at home,
Who cooks from time to time, cleans up and has a job.

2. It's important to have a woman, who can make you

Laugh.

3. It's important to have a woman, who you can trust

And who doesn't lie to you.

4. It's important to have a woman, who is good in bed

And who likes to
be with you.

5. It's very, very important that these four women

Do not know each other.
You control your attitude or it controls you.
