Make Your 1% Attitude a Decision
Sedentary?
The Prognosis is not good.

As Americans, we are becoming huge. Obesity is out of control. And our ability to complete tasks and enjoy life diminishes with each pound. So, why in the hell is this happening, why are we allowing ourselves to become so fat?
It's both physical and mental. Food is one of our greatest pleasures and comforts and we have the cash, time and easy access to abuse it. It's our self reward for being good.
Then there is the TV. We feel we need to be entertained. Every day. For hours. And if it isn't the TV, it's the computer. They both contribute to a sedentary lifestyle.
High calorie intake plus low activity = Suicide.
Are we that bored with our lives?
Accepting the above as fact, what is the best attitude to take on? How can you save your life? We all know the truth. It's staring us right in the face. We have to become more active.
If we don't, WE FRIGGIN DIE!
So what is the best way to lose weight? There are pills, programs, machines, mystics, dancers, special foods, lypo, 10 minute exercises, an endless parade of easy methods to get ripped and look like a million bucks. They all work, in one fashion or another, but each requires low calorie intake and activity. PHYSICAL ACTIVITY!
I thought quitting tobacco was tough. Losing weight is twice as bad. Do you have the cojones? Can you beat that one, too? So how much time can you put aside each day to save your life? What is it worth to your family to have a healthy you? How much more could you enjoy a vacation if you lost weight and your fitness level were higher? How much do you want to just plain feel better?
My guess? If we are intensely active for one hour per day, within reason, we could pretty much eat and do what we wish.
One hour! 4% of your day. People will balk at that figure. They are so busy being important, so busy watching TV shows, so busy worrying about retirement funds, so busy talking to imaginary friends, so busy sleeping 10 hours per day, so busy surfing the web, so busy discussing ailments over the phone, so busy cocktailing, so busy arguing politics, so busy grooming the dog, so busy at the grocery store, so busy at the casino, so busy going out to dinner, so busy, busy, they are hastening their own deaths.
Is one hour per day so much to save your life or keep you out of a hospital? Just for you to feel better about yourself, that doesn't sound like much at all. And have you been paying attention to all the talk about a national health care plan? We'd better get healthy fast because chances are coverage will suck bigtime.
At 65, that's my plan. I am going to spend at least one hour per day doing something that will help my body. For you, it doesn't need to be a regimen of going to the gym or using the bike trail everyday like me. I'm opting for that method because I want to compete in cycling. It can be walking, dancing, yoga, sex, rowing, whatever. In a wheel chair? Pump it around the block.
Considering you are healthy, what do you have to work on most at your age? What are the priorities? These are mine.
1. Legs. Thighs mainly. The heavier you are, the more stress on joints and muscles, and just when they are atrophying from aging. In the short time that I have been working my legs, I no longer feel shaky going up or down steps. It really didn't take much to get it back. You are shaky because your leg muscles are decaying and you no longer trust them to perform a task. If that is true, get on it right away. You are just asking for an injury. In fact, I don't even think of stairs anymore, just like when I was younger. I say to myself, "cool", when I take them two at a time.
2. Tendons. Legs, back, shoulders. Stretching, what I hate the 2nd most. Can you touch your toes without bending your knees? Sit on the floor and try this. It will demonstrate to you how all your tendons are shrinking with time. Since they are like hard rubber bands, they need to be stretched, a lot. Every day. I no longer groan when I pick up something off the floor. I still have a ways to go toward my goal, but the progress has strengthened my resolve.
3. Abs. Stomach muscles. I used to get periodic back pain. What isn't explained is that our bodies are balanced muscularly in such a way that the stomach also has to be strong to support our spine. Besides back exercises, the better the abs, the less back pain. A small ball did it for me. And it felt pretty good doing it, too. Only $10 includes DVD.
4. Grip. The forearms. Easy. A small hand grip will fix this in a hurry. 10 bucks and useable anywhere.
5. Heart and Lungs. This is a tough one because it can be so boring. It's getting the heart rate up and keeping it there, it's huffing and puffing for a long period of time. Best done everyday by walking, running, etc., and on a machine of some kind during inclement weather with a TV to take your mind off what you are doing. This is why I need a gym instead of a home machine. I REALLY HATE IT.
So I've been doing the above, not being as regimented as I want to be, but all the same feeling the improvement. The toughest part is arranging the rest of your day to fit in the activity. There always seems to be something that comes up, somebody is always butting in line. And the temptation is there of wanting to skip it today, I'll catch up tomorrow. To avoid that, try making the activity the center of your day, and all else fits around that.
Older folks also have trouble with depression. Interacting with people at the gym, accomplishing something like losing a few pounds, and pursuing an activity chases the blues away like nothing else. There are also chemical changes that appear to help but no one really knows how it works. Maybe part of it is also giving yourself some pride.
I began my program of improving things by quitting smoking. What this did was increase my desire to eat, drastically. I gained weight instead of losing it. I should have included a break in my plan when quitting the cigarettes, something that would take my mind off of food. Like beginning a non-stop 300+ mile hike from Des Moines to Chicago. That would have really helped, irregardless of the fact that winter was harsh this year.
My goal is to weigh 185 pounds, a mere shadow of myself at a pudgy 237. Sometimes I'll watch a weight loss info-mercial for inspiration. Wouldn't it be great to get a body like that? I try seeing myself attempting the P90X routine. The guy is 50 after all. But then I get whimpy, "I could never do that. Way over my ability." And then I notice one of the guys doing the very vigorous routine has a fake leg. A FAKE LEG? Are you friggin kidding me? Also, check out Core Rhythms. Dance it off! Terrific.
I learn things slowly. You can tell me something over and over, and I believe you, I really do. But I still tend to absorb things the hard way, they have to happen to me. I hear that to accomplish anything, there has to be a mindset, an attitude, a drive to overcome any obstacle in the way of what you want to do. Other people know and accept this readily. Yet I have come to realize all of a sudden, man, it's all in your attitude. It's all in the mind. There isn't anything that I cannot do if I really want it bad enough. No screwing around anymore. I swear. I'm serious.
GET THE HELL OUT OF MY WAY.

You dodged a bullet if you were never in the ring with Cassius Clay. Recent research has found that contact sport athletes who suffered numerous concussions in the past have brains similar in appearance to those presently suffering dementia.
At a meeting of the tribe, the chief was asked, "Is it going to be a cold winter?"
To appear wise and also be on the safe side he answered, "I have looked at the passing clouds and the Great One tells me that he is giving us a cold winter. We had all better collect plenty firewood to see us through."
The question nagged at him so later he called the national weather service. "Does it look like it is going to be a cold winter?" The meterologist said that by all indications the winter would indeed be cold.
Deliberating that in his head, the chief alerted the tribe to collect even more firewood. Being prepared for the worst was all important.
A week later the chief again called the weather service to get an update. He was told, "We have recently revised our forecast. This winter is going to provide a record breaking cold."
Mystified, the chief asked, "How do you know that?"
"Because the woods are full of Indians collecting firewood like crazy."
